A water main break flooded an Upper West Side street Monday night, opening a gaping sinkhole, partially swallowing a car and flooding a dance studio.
The main ruptured at about 9:15 p.m. and created the crater on W. 90th St. near Amsterdam Ave., FDNY officials said.
The gushing waters ripped away the ground beneath a white BMW SUV that was parked on Amsterdam and sent water and sewage flooding into the basement of the Ballet Hispanico studio on W. 89th St.
“Our two studio floors are destroyed. All the costumes in the basement are flooded,” said Eduardo Vilaro, the studio’s CEO. “When Sandy hit, our other costume warehouse in New Jersey was destroyed, so this is round two.”
The rupture also flooded two brownstones, officials said.
Workers moved quickly to minimize the damage, said City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal.
“It got shut off immediately, within a half hour,” she said of the water.
