Pop star Kesha surprised fans at Coachella on Saturday when she took the stage for an impassioned, unannounced performance amid her drawn-out legal battle with record producer Dr. Luke.
The "Tik Tok" singer joined EDM producer Zedd toward the end of his set to perform his 2015 album's title track, "True Colors.
Kesha, who claims Dr. Luke drugged and raped her in California over a decade ago, didn't speak to the audience during her performance. But the song's empowering lyrics seemed to speak for themselves.
"I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes," she sang. "Let me show you my, my true colors."
After the song, she left the stage, still without saying a word.
Hours before she teamed up with Zedd to perform at the Indio, Calif. music festival, Kesha teased that she had something in store for her fans through a pair of Instagram posts.
"Tonight has a magic to it," she wrote, before captioning a separate photo, "4 hours and counting. Somewhere over America eek!!!!!"
It was Kesha's first performance since a Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled in February that she couldn't break her contract with Sony — even though she claimed the six-album deal put her in contact with Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lucasz Gottwald.
Then earlier this month, her counter-claims arguing Gottwald's alleged assault should be classified as a hate crime were dismissed in court.
Gottwald has never been criminally charged and has vehemently denied Kesha's claims. Sony has offered to let Kesha work with a different producer for the remainder of her contract, but the singer has remained intent on breaking ties with the label.
Kesha has received a wave of support from fans and celebrities in recent months, with stars such as Lady Gaga and Adele voicing their support. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, donated $250,000 to her.
Zedd offered his support as well in February when he wrote on Twitter that he'd be "happy to produce a song" for the singer shortly after her hopes of terminating her deal with Sony were denied.
